Welcome to another addition of the KW Physio Blog. Today’s blog will focus on physiotherapy for osteoarthritis (OA) and what we can do to help.

Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic disease of the joints. People often develop arthritis as they become older but it can affect people of all ages. The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are stiffness, particularly first thing in the morning or after resting, and pain. OA can affect many parts of the body including the hips, knees, fingers and feet.

There is no cure for OA, however physiotherapy can be extremely helpful in managing the condition. One of the best things for OA is to stay as active as possible. Strengthening exercises will help to build up the muscles around the joints that are affected. This can ease the burden on these joints and also alleviate pain. Your physiotherapist here at Kiltipper Woods will provide you with a range of treatment options. We can provide range of motion, strengthening, and flexibility exercises. This can help to improve function and quality of life for those with OA.

We also provide Hydrotherapy here at Kiltipper Woods. Hydrotherapy is the safest and most progressive form of rehabilitation because it takes place in a gravity neutral environment thus decreasing impact and trauma on weight bearing joints during rehabilitation.  All programmes are specifically tailored to the needs of each individual patient and are provided on a one-to one basis. Hydrotherapy is very beneficial for patients with OA as less impact is going through the joints. The warm water also eases the pain while exercising.
